Bartsch’s outlook is one of cultural relativism: She refrains from making derogatory comparisons between Chinese and Western cultures-despite the belief of some prominent Chinese scholars that their civilization would benefit from imbibing elements of the Western classical tradition. In Plato Goes to China, Bartsch explains her aim to escape the "hall of mirrors" generated by Westerners taught to believe in the universal validity of such concepts as the superiority of democracy and the notion of individual rights. ![]() 5/27/2023 0 Comments The mouse and the motorcycle 2![]() ![]() Henshaw won the Newbery Medal, and Ramona Quimby, Age 8 and Ramona and Her Father have been named Newbery Honor Books. Honestly, my initial goal was to find out why the people around me weren’t responding so well to my Nice Guy philosophy, and I wanted to find out how to get them to change. I joined a men’s group and started working with a therapist. I decided to start working on my situation. If you talked to the people closest to me, I wasn’t so nice. I was frustrated, resentful, and confused. While in my early 30’s, in spite of my unwavering faith in this philosophy, my life was in crises. Marnia Lazreg, a preeminent authority in Middle East women's studies, combines her own experiences growing up in a Muslim family in Algeria with interviews and the real-life stories of other Muslim women to produce this nuanced argument for doing away with the veil. Is this trend a sign of rising piety or a way of asserting Muslim pride? And does the veil really provide women freedom from sexual harassment? Written in the form of letters addressing all those interested in this issue, Questioning the Veil examines the inconsistent and inadequate reasons given for the veil, and points to the dangers and limitations of this highly questionable cultural practice. ![]() Across much of the world today, Muslim women of all ages are increasingly choosing to wear the veil. ![]() ![]() ![]() As Jamie Mollart says in the acknowledgments, “somewhere at its heart, this noverl is about family.” ![]() The best message, however, is brought at the end, when you find out that, despite objective differences, the passing of time, the hostile environment, family and human relationships are the saviors of the day. In 2017, there were more details released that the story would be based on the 1987’s adaptation of the same film. Back in 2016, there were announcements that Martin’s novella would be used to develop a series for Syfy.
